Spring School on Water Systems, Science and Practice

WIT is organising a Spring School on Water Systems, Science & Practice to be held at LUMS from March 14 to March 18, 2016. The aim of the workshop is to bring together academics (students, researchers, scientists) and practitioners (policy makers, government representatives) and engage them in addressing water management through a multidisciplinary approach. This is important because addressing water challenges requires water managers to apply an integrated and interdisciplinary approach, involving hydrological, economic, institutional, legal, policymaking and planning aspects.

The workshop is critical for building capacity in the water sector and will help to bridge the gap between academia and practice, and establish a fruitful co-operation between the academic community and industry, development agencies, NGOs, public administration, local communities, and other relevant institutions for building capacity in innovation and technology for water management.

CONTENT

The course will have four modules. Each module will be 4-6 sessions of 90 minute contact time / session.

Module 1: Water Science and Hydrology

This module will focus on understanding the physical processes which dictate the interaction of water with the landscape and thus fundamental to managing our resources in the face of mounting environmental challenges and natural resource pressures.

Module 2: Water and its Nexuses with Agriculture, Climate & Energy

This module will provide an overview of the principles and concepts of catchment hydrological modelling techniques and their application in the real world. It will also cover the intrinsic link between the challenge we face to ensure water security and other global issues, most notably climate change and the need to sustainably manage the world’s rapidly growing demand for energy and food.

Module 3: Water Technologies for Quality and Efficiency

This module will go over the chemical composition of water, biosphere compartments and contaminant fate. The primary focus will be on the control and treatment of wastewater from various sources in Pakistan along with the principles and design of state-of-the-art water treatment methods. There will also be discussion of new technologies in irrigation and agriculture.

Module 4: Water Governance, Law and Policy

This module will cover the basics of water law, riparian rights, water policy analysis, game theory, alternatives for analysis and how to implement a systematic framework for critical analysis of these policies.
